I remember, even after all these years, how disappointed I was when I heard that this book was going to be about Garreth and Lucia. The reason I remember is because when I finished an all-night read, I had to admit that I was wrong. Garreth and Lucia quickly became some of my favorites.
Lucia is the Archer. Her skill is unparalleled. Gifted to her by a goddess, with conditions, of course. She often thinks of herself in only these terms. But that’s quickly tested when she happens upon a rugby game and a Lykae prince finds his mate in her.
What I love about Lucia is that she truly never wants to hurt Garreth. She craves what he can offer her, even as she challenges him. But she also has a HUGE responsibility. Not one that she can give up easily because she feels that it’s her fault in the first place.
When Lucia was young, she was tricked by an evil, becoming his wife and then quickly sacrificing her yet mortal body to the cliffs. Now, for thousands of years she’s kept her husband in check. Ensuring that he can never rise. To do this, she must retain her gifts, must remain strong to fight him.
What happens then when a dark prince tempts her beyond all reason, with family, love, happiness, and contentment? Garreth never gives up on his “Lousha.” He chases her for more than a year before he finally catches her. Despite all the close calls and all the pain, he is still ever gentle with her. He treasures her, courts her, and is increasingly sweet to her.
Even while he pushes her boundaries, he respects when she pushes back and loves when they come to compromise.
This is another of those books that features a strong adventure-type storyline. Lucia and Garreth are in the Amazon looking for a god-killer. Something that may end Lucia’s nightmares for good, allowing her to have that something more that she craves.
They face many dangers, from vampires, to cultists, guardianos, drunk captains, and people with secrets. They come across mega-fauna and -flora on their journey – gambling with their lives as they try to reach their goal.
I was completely captivated, even on this 10th or so re-read of Pleasure of a Dark Prince. I love this story, and will always. Even now, when I have so many great stories in front of me – I can’t wait to come back to this one again.
