Every reader has that author that is a favorite, where the books just work for them. Ilona Andrews are those authors for me. Some of their books I just like, others I love, and one series continues to hold me entranced in its world for over a decade now.
Kate Daniels has been one of my all-time favorite characters since I started reading about her adventures in the late 2000s. From the very first paragraph, I loved her. When the series ended with Magic Triumphs in 2018, it was bittersweet. It was a fantastic ending to Kate’s story, but I would always and forever want more.
So when IA announced on their blog that a new Kate Daniels story was coming, soon, I nearly died from excitement. Magic Tides takes place after Magic Triumphs and two years before Blood Heir.
I started reading the moment it downloaded to my Kindle and … it felt like coming home.
This series is simply such a comfort to me. Spending time with Kate and Curran, and others, brought me so much joy. This is a complete adventure, but there’s plenty here that allows for expanding and growing stories in Wilmington.
I’m a huge ‘read in order’ person, so it’s hard for me to say if you could start here. I think this could be a good introduction to Kate though you’ll definitely be spoiled of almost everything that happens in the series to this point. If being spoiled doesn’t bother you, and you haven’t tried Kate yet, it will definitely let you know if this is something you’d like to dive into (and I’d highly recommend it).
If you’ve read and loved Kate to this point, it’s going to give you more of everything you love and know – with some added POVs.
Here’s hoping there are many more Kate Daniels Wilmington books. I’m anxious to see what happens next with some of these newly introduced characters, and maybe get some more insight on how Atlanta evolved to what we see in Blood Heir.
Edit to add: Since I first wrote this, IA have confirmed (and there’s a pre-order) for a second Kate Daniels book set in Wilmington!! I CANNOT WAIT!
I’ve been curious about the Kate Daniels series for a while but never felt a push to get into it. Now that I’ve read your review I’m on Libby starting the series from the beginning lol. Thanks for the push!
Yay! I love this series so much. I really hope you enjoy it. Just to give a heads’ up, the first book is the first book they published, so it definitely has some rough moments, but I still loved it. Nearly every agrees that book 2 is loads better and book 3 is absolutely amazing and the one that makes everyone love it. They’re all really fast-paced reads too. I’d love to hear what you think when you start!
Okay so I just finished Magic Breaks and I’m just so floored by how well developed this series is! I love the characters, the city, and magic, the politics and power struggles, all of it! I blew through as many books as I could because I was so excited about this final confrontation. I’m so satisfied with how things turned out and I can’t wait to see what happens next!
WOW!! You have flown through this! I’m so glad you’re enjoying it so much. Isn’t Kate the best??
Yes! She’s strong but not invincible, smart but not all knowing, and really humble all things considered lol I think in her place I’d have a lot more swagger in my step
I love her sarcasm and ability to handle herself in any situation. And the confidence to not wilt in impossible circumstances.
