Everneath by Brodi Ashton
Series: Everneath (#1)
Rating: ★ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆
Last spring, Nikki Beckett vanished, sucked into an underworld known as the Everneath. Now she’s returned—to her old life, her family, her boyfriend—before she’s banished back to the underworld . . . this time forever. She has six months before the Everneath comes to claim her, six months for good-byes she can’t find the words for, six months to find redemption, if it exists.
Nikki longs to spend these precious months forgetting the Everneath and trying to reconnect with her boyfriend, Jack, the person most devastated by her disappearance—and the one person she loves more than anything. But there’s just one problem: Cole, the smoldering immortal who enticed her to the Everneath in the first place, has followed Nikki home. Cole wants to take over the throne in the underworld and is convinced Nikki is the key to making it happen. And he’ll do whatever it takes to bring her back, this time as his queen.
As Nikki’s time on the Surface draws to a close and her relationships begin slipping from her grasp, she is forced to make the hardest decision of her life: find a way to cheat fate and remain on the Surface with Jack or return to the Everneath and become Cole’s queen.
Everneath is a captivating story of love, loss, and immortality from debut author Brodi Ashton.
This MC, Nikki, is the most emo fucking chick I’ve ever come across in literature. SHE’S WORSE THAN BELLA SWAN. The boy she was dating dumps her so instead of your normal level of teenage angst she decides to let a fucking stranger drag her into the underworld so he can drain her of her life essence because she doesn’t want to feel things anymore.
A hundred years later (six months our time) and they wake up. But instead of not knowing who she is anymore, she remembers. She’s a super speshul snowflake! And this is page fucking eight.
Guess why she remembers. Go ahead, guess. She remembers because the boy that dumped her, Jack, kept her tied to herself somehow. Can I get a WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK?You’re telling me that the very reason she gave up on life in the first place is the same thing that brings her back to it?AND IT’S A BOY???
So when the stranger that just attempted to rape her soul, turn her into a fucking mindless zombie, and relegate her to eternal darkness all so that he can continue to live his charmed immortal life, tells her that since she’s speshul she doesn’t have to go linger in what’s basically hell but can instead become what he is, she opts out and says she’s returning home. Why? Not for her father that just lost his wife to cancer and his daughter to God knows where, not to her lonely and outcast little brother, not to her friends BUT TO THE BOY THAT FUCKING DUMPED HER.
You have got to be fucking kidding me! What the fuck is it with these pathetic fucking heroines? Why is this an actual thing? Why is a boy who dumped her made to be the one that drags her back to her life, makes her want to fucking live?
Oh and it gets better! That piece of shit that attempted to rape her soul, turn her into a fucking mindless zombie, and relegate her to eternal darkness all so that he can continue to live his charmed immortal life is one of the boys in this love triangle.
And this is all in the first 70 pages. Fuck this entire sub-genre.
